When companies use this terminology they are generally referring to any service that ostensibly increases a customer’s business. They are providing a guarantee that the merchandising services they provide will increase customers’ sales and bottom line. Well, they can’t sincerely promise anything of the kind!

Under the best of circumstances, the most that can be assured is that the product customers want placed will get placed and placed with maximum effectiveness, but no one except perhaps a clairvoyant can say for certain whether this will see the desired returns. There are just too many micro and macro issues at work.

Truly qualified merchandisers are hard to come by. I’d estimate that nearly 1/3 of on-line merchandising projects do not complete the desired parameters correctly. All the proposed testing, conference calls, and fancy equipment will not guarantee the quality of the fieldwork completed.

I have been in the retail and manufacturing industry for over thirty years. I ran my own factories and spent countless hours on the sales floor with buyers, all to make sure that my product was given the optimal opportunity to sell. “Location, location, location!” doesn’t just apply to the real-estate business.

Always remember to keep your eye on the big picture. Outlandish promises and results are just that.
